About Us

Our 2010 trip begins on Wednesday, May 19, and finishes up on Thursday, June 10.

We begin our trip in China’s largest city, Shanghai, and we visit the commercial center of Hong Kong and the nation’s capital of Beijing.

Members of our group this year are:

Yvette

Yvette Jon is a rising junior in the School of communication from Miami, Fla. She is double majoring in broadcast journalism and psychology with a possible minor in Spanish.

Yvette is excited to learn more about her background and culture while gaining travel experience. This is her first time visiting Shanghai and Beijing and her second time visiting Hong Kong. Keep an eye out for her blogs….

Kyli

Kyli Singh is a rising junior in the School of Communication from Tampa, Fla. She is double majoring in print journalism and English literature and minoring in international studies.

Interested in Chinese culture, Kyli is looking forward to both travel and to write — her two passions. This is her second time visiting Shanghai and her first time visiting Hong Kong and Beijing.

Ivette

Ivette Figueroa is a graduating senior in the School of Communication from Miami, Fla.

She is double majoring in print journalism and creative writing. Asia has always fascinated her. It is her first time in China, but she previously visited Japan. She is curious to compare the two cultures and find what makes each unique.

Andrea

Andrea Concepcion is a rising junior in the School of Communication from Miami, Fla. She is double majoring in print journalism and history.

Andrea has never been to Asia, not even across the Atlantic Ocean. She feels the experience will broaden her views on an international scale. She hopes to keep you readers interested with what she has to say  about her observations of China. Stay tuned ….

Zahira

Zahira Flores is a graduating senior in the College of Arts & Sciences from Belize City, Belize. She is majoring in international studies.

This is Zahira’s first trip to Asia. She is excited to try new things and see new places. Even though China was not on her list of places to visit, she is certain the trip will be an unforgettable learning experience.

Esther

The class is assisted in Hong Kong and Beijing by Esther Pang, a rising sophomore in the School of Communication from Hong Kong.

She is majoring in journalism and English literature. She has lived in Hong Kong all of her life and she loves showing people around her city. She has been to Shanghai before, but will be visiting Beijing for the first time. She is, she says, really excited about this trip.

The course is led by Dr. Bruce Garrison (bruce@miami.edu), a member of the faculty of the Journalism Program in the School of Communication at UM.

Our Shanghai to Hong Kong to Beijing itinerary ...

Garrison is a former Fulbright grant recipient in Shanghai and he has extensive experience as a traveler in China, Thailand, Japan, India and other countries in Asia.

In Shanghai, we were assisted by our old friend, Dr. Chen Peiqin, a journalism professor at Shanghai International Studies University at Hongkou and Songjiang.

We were also assisted by several new friends from the Shanghai International Studies University journalism graduate program. They are Huo Li, Li Jing, Guo Chen, and Zheng Chung.

We were also assisted by our new friend, Yan Li, in Beijing. We were also helped a great deal in the planning stages this year by UM doctoral student Yu Liu, who was a big part of our 2009 and 2008 China trips, from her base in Miami this year.

We hope you will check out our work….
